World Gymnastics Championships: Purvis and Keatings looking to step up

Great Britain men’s team – including Scots Daniel Purvis and Daniel Keatings – need to step up a level if they are to win their first-ever team medal at the World Championships in Nanning, China.

The GB team were fourth in the two-day qualifying competition behind Japan, China and the USA but know they can make improvements in the eight-team final.

The GB women’s team comfortably made for their final at the end of Monday’s qualifying, also finishing fourth.

They scored a total of 224.596 points with Ruby Harrold leading the way, competing on all four apparatus and scoring 56.766 points.

It also sees her into Friday’s all-around final qualifying in 8th along with team-mate Claudia Fragapane who scored 55.999 for 12th.

Fragapane also progressed through to vault and the floor finals which take place at the weekend, her scores of 14.716 and 14.400 taking her through.

European and Commonwealth Games bars champion Becky Downie again showed her exceptional skills on the bars to score 15.166 and progress through to the final where she will aim to be amongst the medals.

Harrold joins her in the final after impressing the judges, scoring 14.733.

Fragapane is happy with her contribution: “It definitely felt different today, lots more pressure and attention.

“The energy you get from the crowd and also your team-mates is very special.

“There was a real focus on us competing together as a team and getting through to the final and we’ve done that job.

“I’m really happy to have made the floor and vault finals but the first thought is the team – I can think about individuals later in the week. It was amazing to perform with the girls and we can’t wait for the final.”
