Fife Flyers ripped the form book up when they whipped reigning Elite League ice hockey champions Belfast Giants 6-1 in Northern Ireland.
The fired-up Kirkcaldy club claimed the remarkable victory the hard way. Having recorded a bruising 4-0 win over Scottish rivals Braehead Clan on Saturday night, they set out at 7am on Sunday to make the ferry at 11am with the clash starting at 4pm.
But the Scots, who were bottom of the table with only one point gained from four games, stunned the 3,000 fans at The Odyssey.
They ripped apart Giants who were second in the table behind Coventry Blaze with Kirkcaldy-born forward Stephen Gunn netting a glory double and winning the man of the match award.
Canadian forward Chris Auger also pitched in with a double while Kyle Haines and Jordan Fulton claimed singles.
Giants led after only four minutes when former Edinburgh Capitals forward Mark Garside scored the opener. But Flyers roared back and Gunn opened his and Fife’s account with a power play strike five minutes later.
The visitors went ahead three minutes after that when Auger scored and Fulton popped in No 3 when Giants had a man in the sin bin three minutes later.
The fourth came courtesy of Auger and Haines increased Fife’s advantage with a third power play strike. Giants penalty problems allowed Gunn to claim his second and complete the scoring on the power play after 46 minutes.
Danny Stewart, Fife’s associate player coach, said: “We knew we were in for a tough weekend but the guys pulled through to land two big wins.”
