Michel Platini could drop opposition to goal-line technology for France 2016

UEFA President Michel Platini is considering dropping his opposition to goal-line technology and embracing a system for the Euro 2016 finals in France.

He said now that technology has been given the green light by the game’s lawmakers for the World Cup and other tournaments, such as the Premier League, he feels obliged to consider it for Euro 2016.

He insisted, however, it would only be in conjunction with his system of having an extra assistant referee next to each goal.

He told Spanish daily AS: “In the World Cup they are going to use goal-line technology, so I am asking myself if goal-line technology should be introduced at Euro 2016, but together with the five officials per game. That would allow those officials in the penalty area to focus on the plays in their part of the pitch, on the penalties, the corners, and we would all come out winning.

“Goal-line technology has been accepted by the international board and I’m obliged to think about it.”

Platini pointed out that Fifa president Sepp Blatter had also been opposed to the technology Blatter changed his mind after Frank Lampard’s disallowed goal against Germany at the 2010 World Cup.

“It is not a question of age Blatter is older than me, and after having been against technology for many years, he has suddenly decided to be in favour,” said Platini.
