Hearts v Cowdenbeath: Nicholl hopes defence can stay strong at Tynecastle

Cowdenbeath visit Tynecastle to face Hearts on league duty in Edinburgh for the first time since December 1970.

Central Park manager Jimmy Nicholl has added to his pool by bringing in St Mirren midfielder Declan Hughes on loan.

Nicholl said: “Declan is a player I have been keen on for a while and I am delighted to bring him here.

“He will play some part at Hearts although I will decide on Saturday lunchtime what that role will be.”

The Blue Brazil manager is hoping that his side will finally provide the answer to a puzzle that is troubling him.

He explained: “Everyone expected us to struggle to score goals this season after losing very good strikers in Greg Stewart to Dundee and Kane Hemmings to Barnsley but to remain strong in defence.

“However, the opposite has happened and scoring twice last week at Easter Road shows everyone that we are a side that are dangerous when we attack.

“However, we simply have to defend better as it was horrible to go from 2-1 up to losing 3-2 in the last couple of minutes especially as the goals were self-inflicted.

“We are straight out of the frying pan and into the fire in this game and hopefully we can raise the defensive side of our game. If our concentration levels are anything other than 100% then we will get punished severely.”

Nicholl added: “Hearts have been strong all season and will be looking to make up for being shut out against Dumbarton.”

Missing for Cowden are the injured Kenny Adamson and Sammy Stewart, with striker Craig Sutherland having an outside chance of returning after a knee injury.
