A man has been rescued after surviving a night on a remote mountain in freezing temperatures.

A major search operation was launched after Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team was alerted to the missing gamekeeper on Carn an Fhidhleir.

The 3,261ft peak is one of the most remote mountains in the region.

The man was left stranded when his snowmobile broke down and he got lost in white-out conditions trying to get to safety at around 3pm on Wednesday.

More than two dozen rescuers searched for the missing man amid treacherous weather conditions and a significant avalanche risk, battling blizzards and heavy snow.

The Coastguard search and rescue helicopter, RAF and Tayside mountain rescue teams, and staff from the Glen Feshie Estate assisted the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team in the search.

They spent more than 12 hours on the search before it was stood down at 3am.

The rescue party was back out at first light, just three hours later, airlifted on to the mountain by the Coastguard helicopter.

They found the missing gamekeeper at about 8.30am.

Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team leader Willie Anderson said: “He was in tremendously good shape having spent a night out in sub-zero conditions.

“He was on a Ski-Doo which broke down and when he tried to make his way off he became lost in blizzard conditions.

“This was a serious and difficult search and rescue in one of the most remote areas that we cover. Although we had a number of leads, we were only able to narrow the search area down to an area of approximately 200sq km and this area had to be covered in the dark, with blizzard conditions and a significant avalanche danger.

“The Cairngorm team received tremendous support from the RAF mountain rescue team from Lossiemouth, and from the Glen Feshie Estate. Tayside mountain rescue team also assisted us this morning.

“The Coastguard helicopter was hampered by difficult flying conditions last night, however this morning they were able to provide a superb service, lifting teams quickly and efficiently into their search areas.

“I am delighted with the outcome as we were really concerned about the weather and location.

“I was getting seriously worried for this gentleman given the time that he was missing in such a remote and hostile area, however the tremendous efforts of the teams, the Coastguard helicopter and the Glen Feshie Estate have delivered a superb result.

“The Cairngorm team is immensely grateful to all who gave us their support in some pretty wild conditions.”
