Man arrested after alleged stabbing

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following an alleged stabbing in a Perth flat.

A 35-year-old remains in hospital as a result of an incident that occurred at about 6pm on Wednesday in a property on the Fairfield housing estate.

Detectives wasted little time in arresting a 32-year-old man in connection with the allegations. It is understood he has been charged with attempted murder and assault. He is expected to appear at Perth Sheriff Court today.

A police spokeswoman confirmed details of the arrest and said the victim was “recovering.”

“The incident occurred at about 6pm on Wednesday within a flat at Angus Court,” she said. “A 35-year-old man was found to have been stabbed and 32-year-old man has been arrested. He is due to appear at Perth Sheriff Court tomorrow.”

The spokeswoman said the victim of the alleged assault remained in hospital last night.

“He is still in hospital but is said to be stable and recovering well,” she added.

Residents of the Fairfield estate have spoken of their shock in wake of the allegations.

“There was a fair bit of police activity round about the flat so we knew something was up,” one local man said. “It is normally pretty quiet around here so everybody is talking about it.

“Fairfield is quite a small estate so something like this always gets noticed. It’s not really the kind of thing that goes on around here these days so it is pretty shocking really.”

Once one of Scotland’s bleakest housing estates, Fairfield has enjoyed a renaissance over the last two decades.

Formerly known as Hunter Crescent, the estate was once classed as one of the most deprived in Europe. It was established by the local authority in 1937 but by the 1980s had become known for high crime rates and unemployment.

Central to the area’s rejuvenation has been a hugely successful local housing co-operative which was formed in 1986.
