Sexual health phone app launched in Tayside

A smartphone app that gives young people in Tayside information on sexual health has been launched.

The Need Tay Know app was developed by teenage group Youth Talkin’ Health and the Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus Managed Care Network in Tayside.

It provides users with information on sexual health services available and where they are provided. It helps people know how to access them using maps and GPS functionality.

It also contains information on a host of topics relating to sex and relationships including pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, what the risks are and how to stay safe.

A launch event took place at Arbroath High School yesterday with a drama workshop.

NHS Tayside consultant in genito-urinary medicine Dr Ciara Cunningham said that people aged under 25 were the group who needed the most information on sexual health.

She added: “Tayside sexual and reproductive health service recognises that young people are disproportionately affected by sexual ill health.

“We hope that this app will make young people aware that we do have services specifically for them, how to access these and what to expect when they attend.”

Need Tay Know was designed and developed in partnership with young people across Tayside, with their input influencing all stages of the development, from the look of the app to the final content.

NHS Tayside sexual health and blood borne virus manager Donna Thain added: “The interest and feedback we have had from young people has been invaluable in creating the app.

“We want young people to know that they have a choice whether or not to have sex and to support their choice, giving them the confidence to say no, but also giving them the information they need to keep themselves safe if they say yes.”

Need Tay Know is targeted at people aged 13 to 25. It is available to download on Apple and android smartphones and tablets.
