Arbroath High School received an Awards for All lottery fund of £10,000 to purchase 30 new Merida mountain bikes and 30 cycling helmets.

They also received an additional £2,800 from Education Scotland and putting both monies together have been able to redesign their bike shed.

A secure area has been created for the new equipment.

Additional funding from the parent teacher association has provided storage racks that allow bikes to be locked away safely while they are not being used.

Part of the money will also be used to train members of staff in the Cycle Leaders Proficiency Award, enabling them to take groups of pupils off-site during and after the school day.

A spokeswoman said: “Cycling is the fastest growing sport in the UK and with the new Curriculum for Excellence now fully in place and, with the nation’s health at the forefront of many national campaigns, it will allow for an even greater pupil choice in their physical education activities to improve personal fitness levels.”

The bid for lottery funding was pulled together and submitted by former principal teacher of physical education John Grant, sports development officer Steven Bell and principal teacher Nicky Grant.
