Yompers needed to help raise funds for Arbroath athletics track

Sponsorship forms for the yomp were handed out at Arbroath Sports Centre.
Sponsorship forms for the yomp were handed out at Arbroath Sports Centre.

A sponsored yomp will help raise funds for ambitious plans to bring a £1 million athletics track to Arbroath.

The yomp is being organised by Arbroath councillor David Fairweather, who is a member of the Angus Athletics Arena steering group.

The event will take place on Saturday April 2, at 10am, and will see people walk, jog, run or cycle from the West Links playpark in Arbroath along the path to Easthaven.

Angus is one of only two local authorities in Scotland that does not have an all-weather track, and a location for the facility has been identified at Arbroath High School.

The arena campaign is being led by two parents of children who attend Arbroath District Athletics Club Cherise Whamond and Vicky Graham who have organised a series of fundraising events.

Mr Fairweather is encouraging people to take part in the yomp which will help bring a “fantastic facility” to Angus.

He said: “The route to Easthaven and back is under 10 miles and it should be a great day out.

“I’m really hoping that people in Angus will support the yomp if we’re able to get 50 people all getting sponsored then the event could raise thousands towards the campaign.”

Mr Fairweather asked people to contact him on 07766 073823 for a sponsor form, or alternatively people can email angusathleticsarena@gmail.com.

He added: “Some people may have doubts that we can make this happen, but I remember that five years ago people also had doubts that we could bring a skatepark to Arbroath.

“Cherise and Vicky have a great deal of enthusiasm and the more fundraising that we do locally means we are more likely to get support from funding bodies.”

Arbroath councillors Martyn Geddes, Ewan Smith and Donald Morrison, who are all part of the steering group, will also be taking part in the yomp.

Cherise said she was hoping for a good attendance, as the event had already attracted the support of athletes from Arbroath District Athletics Club.

She said: “We are very grateful to David Fairweather for organising the event.

“The meeting place will be West Links park and we will head off from there and continue along the cycle path until we reach Easthaven.

“People could take a break and perhaps have a bite of lunch before heading back to the West Links.

“The athletes from Arbroath District will be taking part in the yomp, alongside steering group members and friends, but everyone is welcome to take part.”
