THE publisher of The Sunday Post has been giving Scots something great to read for generations.

Now, DC Thomson is giving Scots somewhere great to holiday.

We have teamed up with a cruise company to offer readers the chance to join a spectacular trip around the islands of Scotland and the Norwegian fjords.

Embarking on its first voyage in the summer of 2020, the Best of Norway and Scottish Islands tour has been developed as a partnership between DC Thomson Travel – the reader travel division of DC Thomson Media – and Cruise & Maritime Voyages.

Holidaymakers will board the luxurious 1,300-passenger Magellan cruise ship in Dundee, before setting sail to see the best sights of Norway and our own islands on the 10-day trip.

One of the UK’s leading media brands, publishing some of the country’s most popular newspapers and magazines, DC Thomson has its roots in shipping and chairman Andrew Thomson is delighted the company is back on the waves.

He said: “It’s wonderful to see DC Thomson realigning with its heritage by returning to the seas.

“When William Thomson established the Thomson Shipping Line in the 19th Century I’m sure he didn’t contemplate that more than 100 years later DC Thomson would be transporting passengers by ship around the Scottish isles and Norway.

“This kind of diversification of the business is a great fit for DC Thomson.”

Taking inspiration from some of the world’s most popular cruise holidays, the one-off itinerary will showcase some of the Northern Hemisphere’s most spectacular sights, including the landscapes of Orkney and Shetland, the fjords of Flam, and the mountains overlooking Bergen.

Holidaymaker Gus Proctor, from Dundee, has previously sailed on the Magellan ship, and believes future passengers will make memories to last a lifetime.

He said: “Magellan is a lovely, friendly cruiser. Food, staff and hygiene are excellent and leaving from Dundee means you are instantly on holiday. We loved the hot tub on deck, the rollmop herrings for breakfast, and the lively theme nights in the restaurant.

“Waking up as the ship glided up a Norwegian fjord, with distant waterfalls cascading down the steep hills was an amazing experience, and the first of many!”

Last year almost two million people around the UK embarked on a cruise holiday, experiencing multiple countries in just one trip. And with record numbers set to continue, the Magellan will be part of a growing holiday trend.

Craig Houston, head of enterprise for DC Thomson Media, added: “Working with Cruise & Maritime Voyages to bring this highly desirable sailing route to DC Thomson Travel customers has been a pleasure.

“We’re excited to be offering such a special route with a trusted partner and we can’t wait to hear what our passengers say about this amazing trip.”

The Best of Norway & Scottish Isles cruise is available on a save up to 20% plus Buy One Get One Half Price basis – on new bookings made by 31st July 2019. The first passenger pays the lead in-price, the second passenger pays half that price.
