Many might overlook the north-east when it comes to spots for a spring adventure, but Aberdeen local Laura McIntosh is here to prove them wrong.
Laura has two pups who keep her and partner Stuart on their toes, so they are always on the hunt for dog-friendly days out that don’t take them too far from home.
Here are the top spots Laura reckons you should make a point of visiting this spring.
Greyhope Bay
Greyhope Bay is one of those magical spots where nature, history, and community come together perfectly. Whether you’re an early riser chasing breathtaking sunrises or someone who loves a golden sunset over the water, this place never disappoints. The views across the North Sea are simply stunning, and if you’re lucky, you’ll spot Aberdeen’s famous bottlenose dolphins playing just off the shore—one of the best places in the UK to see them from land!
Then there’s the Greyhope Bay Centre with a gorgeous little dog friendly café that sits in the historic Torry Battery. It’s completely off-grid, which makes it even cooler, and serves up great coffee and cakes with some of the best views in the city. There’s something special about sipping a hot drink while watching the waves roll in and seabirds glide past.
It’s the kind of place that makes you pause, breathe, and really appreciate the beauty of Aberdeen’s coastline. Whether you’re dolphin-spotting, soaking in the history, or just enjoying a peaceful moment by the sea, Greyhope Bay is always a lovely visit.
The Old Post Office Tearoom
Tucked away in the picturesque village of Chapel of Garioch, the Old Post Office Tearoom is a delightful blend of history and homeliness. Once the village’s post office, this charming establishment has been thoughtfully transformed, retaining many original features that whisper tales of yesteryears.
Stepping inside feels like a warm embrace. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingles with the scent of homemade cakes, inviting you to sit and savour the moment. Their menu boasts freshly-made sandwiches, hearty soups, and an array of baked delights crafted by local bakers. It’s also dog-friendly, making it a favourite among walkers exploring the nearby Bennachie Hills.
Kirkhill Forest
Just a short drive from Aberdeen, Kirkhill Forest is where I go when I need a dose of nature and a bit of adventure. The network of trails here is fantastic, catering to everyone from casual walkers to seasoned mountain bikers.
One of my favorite spots is the Tappie Tower atop Tyrebagger Hill. It’s a bit of a climb, but the panoramic views from the summit are absolutely worth it, offering a unique perspective of Aberdeenshire’s rolling landscapes.
What I love most about Kirkhill is its versatility. Whether I’m in the mood for a challenging hike, a leisurely dog walk, or simply a peaceful escape among the trees, this forest delivers every time. It’s a place that invites you to explore, breathe deeply, and reconnect with the great outdoors.
