The Scottish Newspaper Society is saddened to record the death of Alastair Stuart, the former editorial director of Thomson Regional Newspapers and, in 1989, the founding editor of Scotland on Sunday.

Stuart, who was awarded the CBE for his services to journalism, passed away on March 4 aged 89

SNS director John McLellan, a former editor of Scotland on Sunday, said “The Scottish industry owes a debt of gratitude to Alastair and TRN for having the drive and vision to launch Scotland on Sunday only six years after the collapse of the Sunday Standard and its success led to the launch of Wales on Sunday. Our thoughts are with his family.”

Tributes and obituaries can be read  on The Scotsman website, Holdthefrontpage and Press Gazette
