  5. Election preview and new Scottish advertising figures at SNS event

A General Election preview with four senior Scottish editors will be at the heart of an SNS  reception at the Scottish Parliament this Thursday to celebrate the centenary of the Scottish Daily Newspaper Society.

Founded in 1915, the SDNS merged with the Scottish Newspaper Publishers Association five years ago to form the  Scottish Newspaper Society.

Damian Bates (Press & Journal), Richard Walker (Sunday Herald/The National), Jim Wilson (Sunday Mail) and Gordon Smart (The Scottish Sun) will join director John McLellan for a look ahead to the May 7 poll and to discuss the possible landscapes in which the media will operate after that.

A new SNS video will also be unveiled, featuring a recently-conducted study of advertising use in Scottish newspapers from the Swedish-based  research company, Research and Analysis of Media (RAM), which has recently opened in Scotland under the highly-respected analyst Dianne Newman.

Sponsored by Shetland MSP Tavish Scott, the reception will be held in the old members’ restaurant on Thursday at 5.30pm and is supported by Chivas Brothers.

The event has been organised by the SNS in conjunction with Mediaforce as part of the current SNS campaign to highlight support for the industry amongst leading Scottish business figures. The first of a series of adverts ran across most SNS member titles last week and will be followed up by a series of testimonial adverts from now until Easter.

SNS director John McLellan said: “There is a good story to tell about Scottish newspapers and while it would be foolish to minimise the challenges faced in what continues to be a highly competitive world, it’s right that we celebrate the key role newspaper companies continue to play in the way in which Scottish people, politicians and companies communicate.”
