Plans to breathe new life into Aberdeen beach are heating up, with councillors agreeing the timeline for major construction work.

Under the freshly agreed itinerary, work could commence on the multi-million pound seaside revamp by the end of next year.

The scheme will include a distinctive boardwalk stretching out into the sea, playparks, a new events arena, the creation of an ampitheatre and the rejuvenation of the Beach Ballroom.

And officers have also now been instructed to compile a business case for a new Aberdeen FC stadium as part of the masterplan.

It will be discussed later this year, with the Dons appearing increasingly keen on the idea of relocating near to their historic Pittodrie home.

Aberdeen beach timeline agreed

The framework agreed at the full council meeting this afternoon will form the backbone of the mammoth project as it progresses.

Speaking afterwards, Aberdeen City Council co-leader Alex Nicoll said he “looked forward to more updates in the coming months”.

The SNP group boss added that the plans will result in “an open and more accessible beachfront with new facilities”.

Talks with Dons on new stadium to continue

Leader of the Conservative group, Ryan Houghton, hopes it will help turn the tide on the city’s fortunes.

He said: “It’s great news that the council agreed to progress the beach plan initiated by the previous administration.

“The works involve a number of new projects, including the possibility of working with Aberdeen FC.

“The project will ensure it’s an asset for the city, a vibrant, thriving beachfront that people want to go to.”

There will be an update on the business cases for the improvements in December.
